Issue #38, January 16, 2004

EDITOR'S EYE

Dear Social Work Colleagues,

Welcome to Issue #38 of the Social Work E-News. This e-mail newsletter is brought to you by the publisher of THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER magazine and other social work publications.

I hope your 2004 is off to a fantastic start! This is a time of year when many people set goals or "resolutions" for themselves. I hope you and your clients make great progress toward all your goals in the coming year.

This will be a short newsletter. I want to call your attention to a couple of items. First, yesterday was the birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. This day will be officially observed on Monday, January 19. Please take some time to think about the goals and dreams Dr. King had, and how you can continue those goals and dreams. In this newsletter, read about Denny's New Year's Resolution Challenge, part of its "Realization of a Dream" campaign.

The second relates to my own goal/dream. In 1996, I put into action an idea I had-to collect stories of social workers' typical days and publish them in a book, called DAYS IN THE LIVES OF SOCIAL WORKERS. The second edition was published in 1999. Now, I am planning the third edition of this book, and I'd like to ask you to consider contributing your story. You will find an announcement in this newsletter.

Until next time,
Linda Grobman, ACSW, LSW

CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS-FROM LINDA GROBMAN

I am in the process of planning the third edition of my book, DAYS IN THE LIVES OF SOCIAL WORKERS. I plan to add a small number of new chapters to this book.

DAYS IN THE LIVES OF SOCIAL WORKERS focuses on "typical" days in the lives of social workers. This book serves as a career resource for social workers, students, and those considering entering the profession, and is used as a textbook for Introduction to Social Work and other courses. Each chapter is written by a professional social worker with a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree in social work. Chapters are written in first person, describing a day in the writer's life as a social worker.

I am seeking submissions for the third edition of this book. Please take a look at http://www.socialworker.com/days2page.htm to see the table of contents of the current (2nd) edition. If you work in or have experience in an area of social work that is not covered by the current chapters, or are using your social work training in an unusual or nontraditional way, and are interested in submitting a chapter about your work, please e-mail me at linda.grobman@paonline.com ( mailto:linda.grobman@paonline.com ) and tell me about your proposed chapter. If I am interested in your proposal, I will send you the complete guidelines for submissions.

Thank you!

Denny's Presents New Year's Resolution Challenge

Denny's Pledges 12.6 Million Minutes of Community Service, Plans to Raise
$1 Million for The King Center and Challenges America to Help Local Communities

SPARTANBURG, S.C.& Denny's, the largest full-service family restaurant chain in the United States, is challenging Americans and its own employees to make a difference in 2004. According to a New Year's resolution online survey conducted by Denny's, only four percent of more than 500 respondents listed volunteering in the community high among their 2004 resolutions. In response, as part of its "Realization of a Dream" campaign, Denny's is making a nationwide call for people to commit to community service to help "realize" Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream of The Beloved Community, where we serve one another by giving our time, energy, talents and resources to our neighborhoods and communities in order to become a stronger nation. To accept the Denny's challenge and for more information on how to find a community service opportunity near you, log onto http://www.thekingcenter.org

Denny's "Realization of a Dream" campaign also asks its own employees to pledge more than 12.6 million minutes of service to local community organizations in 2004. As part of the campaign, the restaurant chain will raise at least $1 million to fund the creation of the Nonviolent Kingian Youth Service Learning Program, to be distributed to over 300 youth organizations across America. The program will teach millions of young people Dr. King's principles of nonviolence and community service. Denny's will donate 20 cents from the sale of its popular All-American Slam® breakfast entrée to The King Center to fund the development of the program.

"Denny's is helping us realize the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for America by teaching the critical importance of service and how it can mold and build a local community," said Mrs. Coretta Scott King, founder of The King Center. "Dr. King's dream was to make community service a way of life, not just a single day of service that we celebrate January 19th on his birthday."

Within the past 12 months, community donations and volunteering reached an all-time low since trends first began to be measured in the 1960s. Volunteering provides benefits for everyone involved and takes as little or as much time as a person has to give. In the words of Dr. King himself: "Life's most persistent and nagging question is 'What are you doing for others?' "

Need more reasons to commit to community service? Take a look at these statistics:
* More than 80 percent of nonprofit organizations in the U.S. rely on volunteers;
* In 2001, volunteers represented the equivalent of more than nine million full-time employees, at a value of $239 billion, or an estimated hourly value of $15.40 per hour; and
* Volunteers do about one-third of the work of all nonprofit organizations.
