Issue #29, April 21, 2003
EDITOR'S EYE

Dear Social Work Colleagues,

Welcome to Issue #29 of the Social Work E-News. This e-mail newsletter is brought to you by the publisher of THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER magazine and other social work publications.

Much has happened in the world since our last issue. There are many different opinions on war, among social workers as well as among the general public. There are social workers who are serving in the military. Others are working with military families. Still others will see the effects that the daily news reports have on children in schools and other places. Professionals, including social workers, need to be prepared to respond to war-related concerns. In this issue, I have included some information about war-related resources for social workers.

April marks the observance of, among other things, Alcohol Awareness Month, Child Abuse Prevention Month, National Autism Awareness Month, Cancer Control Month, and National Sexually Transmitted Diseases Awareness Month. This is by no means an exhaustive list of such observances-just a sampling. See the article in this E-News about National Donate Life Month. Last month, I mentioned that it was National Social Work Month in the U.S. A reader brought to my attention that last month also included Social Work Week in Canada. When are social workers recognized in your part of the world?

Until next time,
Linda Grobman, ACSW, LSW

ALLIANCE FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN MAKES WAR-RELATED ARTICLES AVAILABLE

The article WAR, DEATH, AND BEREAVEMENT: HOW WE CAN HELP, by Joan Beder, will be published in the upcoming issue of FAMILIES IN SOCIETY (Volume 84, Issue 2), which will be mailed in early June. Families in Society (FIS) is making this article available for individual downloads (and individual use) as a PDF document at no cost. The article can be downloaded now from http://www.alliance1.org/fis by clicking on "FIS Features" and "War and Counseling." The journal is making the article widely available in PDF format ahead of schedule because of its timeliness and its potential utility for social workers.

A reprint of a second FIS article, DIARY OF A BOYS' GROUP: JANUARY 16, 1991, by Andrew Malekoff, is also available for download from the same site. It is an essay about working with a group of adolescent boys, and their reactions to the Gulf War in 1991. THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER has published some of Malekoff's writing in relation to the September 11 attacks.

COUNCIL ON SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION ANNOUNCES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dr. Julia M. Watkins has been named the executive director of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) beginning July 1, 2003. The appointment was made by CSWE President Frank R. Baskind and the Board of Directors. Dr. Watkins will replace Dr. Donald W. Beless, who is retiring after 15 years as executive director.

Dr. Watkins served as president of the American University in Bulgaria from August 1993 to June 2003. Previously, she was professor of social work, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and interim vice president for academic affairs at the University of Maine. Dr. Watkins created the University of Maine's baccalaureate social work degree program and laid the groundwork for the master's of social work program. She has also served on the CSWE Commission on Accreditation, on the Publications Committee, and as an accreditation site visitor. Dr. Watkins is an accomplished author, speaker, and researcher in the fields of social policy and gerontology.

Dr. Watkins has served on the boards of many nonprofit organizations, including the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, the Foundation for Local Government Reform, the Rector's Council of Bulgaria, the Board of the New Symphony Orchestra in Sofia, and Rotary International in Bulgaria. She was president of the Association of American International Colleges and Universities from 1998-2000 and president of the Alliance of Universities for Democracy from 2000-2002. Dr. Watkins received a master's degree in social work and a PhD in educational psychology from the University of Utah.

In announcing the appointment, Dr. Frank Baskind said, "Dr. Watkins's rare combination of strong leadership skills and distinguished background in social work education and university administration fits well with CSWE's mission and future plans."

SECRETARY THOMPSON DESIGNATES APRIL AS "NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH"

The month of April is being observed as National Donate Life Month in the U.S. to help raise public awareness of the critical need for organ, tissue, marrow, and blood donation.

"Each year the month of April brings springtime and nature's renewal," said HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson. "Now, each April will remind all Americans of their own ability to renew and enhance life through the gift of donation." In past years, the third week in April was designated as "National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week."

Thousands of people have already recognized the importance of giving the gift of life to others. In 2002, 22,741 organ transplants and more than 46,000 corneal transplants were performed in the United States, and an average of 173 transplants were facilitated each month by the National Bone Marrow Donor Registry.

The need, however, is still enormous. Close to 81,000 individuals are on the waiting list for organ transplants, and thousands need tissue and corneal transplants each year. About 30,000 people a year are diagnosed with blood diseases that may be cured by a marrow/blood stem cell transplant. And each day approximately 32,000 units of blood are needed, yet only about 5 percent of eligible blood donors give blood regularly.
"As someone whose life was saved by the selfless act of an organ donor, I urge Americans to embrace National Donate Life Month and to participate in honoring those who have donated by following their heroic example," said Stuart L. Brower, president of the Coalition on Donation and vice president of ABC Entertainment.

To honor living donors and deceased donors and their families from across the nation, following the April observance, the National Donor Recognition Ceremony and Workshop will be held from July 12-13 in Washington, D.C. Transplant recipients will be in attendance, along with representatives of regional organ procurement organizations and key transplant organizations. More information on National Donate Life Month is available at www.organdonor.gov

There are many interesting discussions taking place on THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER's online discussion forum. We just published our latest "Interactive Article." The article was published in the Spring 2003 issue of THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER (in print), and is also published on the Web site. Titled ETHICAL DECISION MAKING MEETS THE REAL WORLD OF FIELD WORK, this article presents a case in which one student inadvertently obtains information about her own client from another student's case presentation in a field seminar. Go to http://www.socialworker.com/discus and click on "Interactive Articles" to join the discussion of the ethical dilemmas that ensue.
