EDITOR'S EYE

Dear Social Work Colleagues,

Happy new year, and welcome to the latest issue of our e-mail newsletter. Thank you to everyone who answered my call for BSW student questions in the last issue. In this issue, I have responded to the most common question I received-that of finding out about social work licensing. I will try to respond to other questions in future issues of the newsletter.

Thank you to everyone for your input as this newsletter has developed over the last half of 2001. I look forward to corresponding with you in 2002.

"FACING FEAR" CURRICULUM AVAILABLE
The American Red Cross has developed a new curriculum for helping children face fear related to terrorism and tragic events. "Facing Fear: Helping Young People Deal with Terrorism and Tragic Events" is a three-chapter supplement to the Red Cross's Masters of Disaster disaster education kit for grades K-8, released in June 2000. The new "Facing Fear" supplement is available for four different age groups-grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Each chapter contains four lessons and accompanying activity sheets.

Teachers, parents, and other adults who work with children can order the kits, at no charge, through their local American Red Cross chapters. For more information, see http://www.redcross.org/news/ds/features/011114mastersdisaster.html

NEW AUSTRALIAN SOCIAL WORKER EMBARKS ON FILM PROJECT

Amanda Vos is a recent social work graduate from the University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia). She will be traveling throughout the USA and Canada from the end of March until the beginning of August, meeting with practitioners and students, listening to their stories of practice, sharing in their dreams and passions, and developing and raising awareness regarding the issue of social worker self-care (i.e. the prevention of burnout). She will be filming the experience, so it can be used as a resource that to inspire practice (and study!) and celebrate the work being done by social workers on a global scale. She will then travel to the UK, Europe, and hopefully parts of Asia over the next 2-3 years doing the same thing.

If you are an individual practitioner or student, member of a professional association (e.g. NASW), or a college/university faculty member interested in being involved (or you would just like to know more), she would like to hear from you. Contact Amanda Vos at .

SOCIAL WORK LICENSING-WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
by Linda May Grobman, ACSW, LSW

I recently asked BSW subscribers to this newsletter, "What is the one question that is on your mind that your professors have not answered?" The most common response was, "How can I prepare for the licensure exam? How do I become certified (or licensed), and what are the differences between the different levels of certification/licensure?"

I often am asked these kinds of questions by students who visit THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER's Web site or who read my publications. I am surprised at the number of students and recent graduates who do not know the answers to these questions.

When I worked as a staff member at my state Chapter of NASW, I often visited social work programs in the area and spoke to groups of students. The subject of licensure was a popular one for these talks. We often covered the following:

1. What is licensure?
2. What is the purpose of licensure?
3. What are the specifics of licensing for social workers in this state?
4. What are the levels of licensure in this state (and surrounding states)?
5. What are the requirements for licensing at my level (BSW, MSW, and so forth)?
6. How (and when) do I apply to become licensed?
7. How (and when) do I apply to take the licensure exam?
8. How can I best prepare for the licensure exam?
9. Is licensure required before I can get a job?

The answers to some of these questions vary from state to state. A social work license is a credential that is issued by the state government in the state where the social worker practices. The primary purpose of licensing is to protect the public-it insures that the person has at least met certain minimum criteria that qualify him or her to provide social work services. Some states require that social workers be licensed in order to practice, while others offer "title protection"-the social worker may not use a certain title unless licensed to do so.

Most states license social workers at the MSW level, and some have BSW licensing, as well. Most states use the ASWB (Association of Social Work Boards) exam. To be licensed, you must complete the state's licensing application form, take (and pass) the exam, and meet any other requirements that have been set forth by that state's social work licensing board. Once licensed, you may be required to attend a certain number of hours of continuing education programs each year, in order to renew your license.

For specific information about licensing requirements and procedures in your state, go to the ASWB Web site at http://www.aswb.org - there you will find a directory of all state social work licensing boards, along with basic information for each state. Contact your state's licensing board for the most up-to-date information on what you need to do to obtain this important credential
