EDITOR'S EYE

Dear Social Work Colleagues,

There has been quite a bit of spirited discussion on our site's message board lately, under the "Social Work Ethics" topic. The discussion centers around students' questions about confidentiality. When is it okay to reveal what a client has told us? Is it okay to "bend the rules"? Can this stuff be taught in the classroom, is it learned "on the job," or does it "just come naturally"? To weigh in on this topic, go to http://www.socialworker.com/discus and click on "Social Work Ethics," then look for the "confidentiality" sub-topic.

Rich Bott, our volunteer chat host, is also making this the topic of this Sunday's chat on our site. The regular chat time is Sunday nights at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. Join Rich and others for a lively discussion. Go to our main page at http://www.socialworker.com and click on the "Chat Now" button.

Until next time,
Linda Grobman, ACSW, LSW

CALL FOR INFORMATION/WORDS OF WISDOM

I am writing two articles for social work students in field placement--one on "Your First Client" and another on "Termination." I would love to hear any words of wisdom that you would like to share with students in regard to these two topics. Also, please let me know of any good references on either of these topics. Please respond to me at

IN PRINT

BECOMING A SOCIAL WORKER: REFLECTIONS ON A CLINICIAN'S TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY, by Manfred J. Melcher, will soon be available. This book follows Manfred through his graduate school experience at Smith College School for Social Work. First it was a series of articles for THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER; now it's been expanded into a book. Manfred focuses on the idea that "becoming" a social worker is an ongoing process, and that it transforms one not only into a new social worker, but into a new person, as well. The book includes "Reflections" pages for readers to record their own journeys. Watch our Web site (http://www.socialworker.com) for further details, or contact me () to receive more information.

The Fall 2001 issue of THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER magazine is now available and features the following:

SITES WE'VE SEEN

http://socialworkworld.org
SOCIAL WORK WORLD--About.com has recently moved to a new model of operation. As of this week, it has eliminated many of its very informative and useful sites, including the social work one. The About.com Social Work Guide, Elizabeth Mitchell, is developing a brand new site, which will include much of the information she has already developed for the About.com social work site.
