Chat With Colleagues for Fun and Networking
By Susan Mankita, MSW, LCSW

(Editor's Note: This article is excerpted from the Summer 2008 issue of THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER. See our Web site to read the full article. The SocialWorkChat.org site is co-sponsored by THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER and NASW.)

Mila, Jerry, Larry, Kryss, Roger, Judith, and I are the closest of colleagues and friends. We're all part of an intimate circle that includes some of the best and brightest social workers I've ever known. We do our best to get together whenever we can, and over time, each has given me countless hours of support. I'd like to invite them all to dinner, just to say "thanks," but that would be next to impossible on short notice. They are spread out around the country in DC/Virginia, Alabama, Indiana, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Ohio-and I live in South Florida. Our friendships have blossomed and are nurtured online in a chat room created by social workers for social workers.

Twice every week, this group of social workers and others from around the country (and occasionally the world) "get together" to chat about things that matter to us. Sometimes the discussions are casual, although they are often focused and professional. We invite "experts" to join us and share their know-how or take turns educating each other. Occasionally, it gets personal, and we morph into a support group for a struggling colleague.

I'd like to demystify chatting for you, within this discussion, with a description of how it works and a look at the benefits this type of social work connection offers. I've asked my online social work friends for some input, which I'll share, but ultimately, I'd like to invite you to join and broaden our intimate circle.

Juvenile Arthritis Affects Nearly 300,000 Children and Teenagers

With nearly 300,000 children and teenagers under the age of 18 affected by arthritis or other rheumatologic conditions, JA is one of the most common childhood diseases in the U.S. A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that children diagnosed with JA and other rheumatologic conditions account for approximately 827,000 doctor visits each year, including an average of 83,000 emergency department visits.

In an ongoing effort to help youth with JA and their families, the Arthritis Foundation recognizes Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month each July and works to promote programs and projects that bring attention to this over-looked disease.

In conjunction with Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month in July, the Arthritis Foundation is releasing the book, Raising a Child with Arthritis, which addresses many of the concerns parents have about JA -- from diagnosis and treatments to family and financial issues.

From the editors of the Arthritis Foundation's Kids Get Arthritis Too award-winning national newsletter, Raising a Child with Arthritis provides facts about various types of JA and information about new treatments, such as biologic drugs, while also providing practical information on giving shots, navigating the education system, coping with flares, and managing daily activities without pain. In addition, parents and young adults who grew up with the disease share their experiences and tips for success throughout the book.

"It is important for all parents of children with arthritis to gain knowledge about the disease so it doesn't overshadow their child's life," says Patience H. White, M.D., M.A., Arthritis Foundation chief public health officer and a pediatric rheumatologist. "With one in 250 children diagnosed with arthritis or related conditions, it is essential for parents to feel empowered to assist their child. This book can help them understand more about their child's disease and treatment options to improve the quality of life for their child and family."

In addition to the release of Raising a Child with Arthritis, the following Arthritis Foundation activities will take place in July during Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month:

National JA Conference -- The Arthritis Foundation hosts the National JA Conference each year to bring together children with arthritis and their families, along with health professionals who are knowledgeable about JA. The goal is to help families understand their treatment options, better cope with JA, and find strength from others living with arthritis. This year's conference will be held in Costa Mesa, Calif. from July 10-13.

Juvenile Arthritis Alliance Web Site Launch & (http://www.arthritis.org/ja-alliance-main.php)
In an effort to provide more clear and concise information to families living with JA, the Arthritis Foundation introduced the Juvenile Arthritis Alliance Web site this month. The new site offers content aimed at the entire community of people interested and involved in the lives of those who have JA including parents, young adults, caregivers, teachers, health care providers, researchers and advocates.

Raising a Child with Arthritis will be released on July 18, with pre-order sales beginning on July 10. For more information about Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month activities, visit http://www.arthritis.org/ja-information.

Verizon Wireless HopeLine Scholars Named

Somerset County (New Jersey) residents Rupa Khetarpal and Amanda Mathisen recently completed studies at Rutgers University School of Social Work, where they were named 2008 Verizon Wireless HopeLine® Scholars.

Funded by a $100,000 Verizon Wireless grant, the Verizon Wireless HopeLine Scholarship Fund was created in conjunction with the Center on Violence Against Women & Children to recognize outstanding Rutgers University graduate students enrolled in the Master of Social Work (MSW) specialization on violence against women and children, the first such program in the country. Income generated by the endowment will be used to award scholarships, annually, to at least three students.

Khetarpal, a resident of Basking Ridge, N.J., received the award for her research on "Carrying the Burden of Shame, Rape: A Weapon of War." She also was recognized for her field work as counselor, advocate, and educator at the Morris County Prosecutor's Office and Morris County Sexual Assault Center while studying for her Masters at the School of Social Work.

Fellow recipient Amanda Mathisen, of Skillman, N.J., received the award for her research on "Achieving Economic Self-Sufficiency" and her direct work with families and children traumatized by violence in the home.

Khetarpal and Mathisen joined a third scholarship recipient, Kristin Dunne of Pompton Plains, N.J., and Rutgers School of Social Work leaders last month at the Verizon Wireless HopeLine Scholars Colloquium in New Brunswick, N.J., to present the results of their semester-long research.

"We are thrilled that Rupa and Amanda are two of our first ever MSW students to receive these scholarships," said Judy Postmus, director of the Center on Violence against Women & Children at Rutgers School of Social Work. "They will set the standard for other students to learn about and work with survivors of physical and sexual violence."

The Verizon Wireless donation was made possible through the company's HopeLine phone recycling program, which collects no-longer-used wireless phones at its Communications Stores throughout New Jersey and nationwide. The phones are refurbished, recycled, or sold and the proceeds are used to provide wireless phones and cash grants to local shelters and non-profit organizations that focus on domestic violence prevention and awareness. Phones that cannot be refurbished are disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.

In addition to a successful phone recycling program and funding for non-profit domestic violence prevention organizations, HopeLine includes free wireless service and voice mailboxes for survivors, community and corporate awareness initiatives, and a bilingual "Invest in Yourself" program designed to help survivors re-enter the workforce. HopeLine phone donations also are accepted at all Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in New Jersey and across the nation. For store locations and additional information, visit http://www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.

Jim Kelly Elected NASW President

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has elected Jim Kelly, PhD, ACSW, LCSW, as its president. With nearly 150,000 members, NASW is the largest professional organization of social workers worldwide. Dr. Kelly brings more than 25 years of social work education experience to the NASW presidency.

Dr. Kelly is the Provost and Executive Vice President of Menlo College in Atherton, CA. He is a tenured social work educator, having worked for many years in the California State University system, most recently as a professor, Associate Vice President of Continuing and International Education, and Interim Provost at California State University, East Bay.

"Dr. Kelly brings a wealth of talent and experience to the leadership of NASW. His diverse background and widespread experience as a social work educator will be a great benefit to the progress of NASW," says Dr. Elizabeth Clark, executive director of NASW.

Dr. Kelly has been actively involved with NASW serving as president of NASW's California Chapter, and has been active in the Tennessee, Massachusetts, and Hawaii chapters. In 1987, he was named NASW's Social Worker of the Year.

"NASW's most important function is to advocate for the social work profession on behalf of our clients. As a community, we must continue to attain the highest professional standards, protect client and practitioner rights, and improve health and human service systems of care." says Dr. Kelly. "I hope that as president of NASW I can work with all social workers to advance the profession and to provide more for individuals, families, and communities."

A former consultant to the United Nations on aging, Dr. Kelly has extensive global experience in higher education. His division at Cal State East Bay operated the International House residence and supervised on-campus international students, including significant contingents from China and Saudi Arabia. He was responsible for U.S. and international student recruitment, retention, and support services, and administered MBA programs in Austria, Russia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, and a CPA program in Japan.

Dr. Kelly was recently honored by Congresswoman Barbara Lee of California, who highlighted his many accomplishments while working in the California State University system. "Dr. Kelly's commitment to the students and faculty of the CSU system, as well as the community at large, has had a positive impact on countless lives," she said.
