EDITOR'S EYE

Dear Social Work Colleagues,

Welcome to the 5th issue of our e-mail newsletter. The newsletter continues to evolve and grow. As I have said before, the content/format of this newsletter is flexible, and I'm open to your suggestions about what you would like to see. Do you want more news, more jobs, more Web sites? Let me know!

We provide more in-depth articles for social workers and social work students through THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER, our quarterly print magazine, in existence since 1994. You can find some sample articles on our Web site (http://www.socialworker.com).
Speaking of our Web site, it is clear from reading our message board at http://www.socialworker.com/discus that the Fall semester/quarter is in full bloom. Many students have joined/started discussions on several interesting and provocative topics, including confidentiality, dual relationships, social work careers. They are looking for other students, as well as seasoned professionals, to talk to about these issues. We recently upgraded our message board, and you can create your own user account and profile. Just go to http://www.socialworker.com/discus and click on "Edit Profile" under Utilities. Then you will be able to create your username and password. (An account is not required, but will allow you to use some extra features.) Please join in the dialogue!

Until next time,

Linda Grobman, ACSW, LSW

If you have been involved in research related to welfare reform, please contact IASWR at . Studies and reports can be mailed or faxed to: Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research, 750 First Street NE, Suite 700, Washington, DC 20002-4241, 202-336-8351. FEATURE: BOOK REVIEW

LIFEBOOKS: CREATING A TREASURE FOR THE ADOPTED CHILD, by Beth O'Malley, ISBN 0-9701832-7-5, $13.95, Adoption-Works (http://www.adoptionlifebooks.com). Reviewed by Linda May Grobman.

LIFEBOOKS: CREATING A TREASURE FOR THE ADOPTED CHILD provides a simple explanation of the concept of lifebooks, as well as a blueprint for creating them. The idea is simple, yet creative: to make a book that helps answer the questions an adopted child (or a child in foster care) might have about his or her life. It includes information about the child before, during, and after the placement. It can be simple, with words only, or it can be an elaborately decorated scrapbook with lots of pictures. O'Malley, an adoptee herself and an adoption worker for over 20 years, has participated in the making of many lifebooks-the process can involve the child him/herself, the social worker/caseworker, adoptive and foster parents, birth parents, siblings, and anyone else involved in the child's life. Besides explaining what lifebooks are and how to make them, O'Malley includes in her book three full-length examples According to O'Malley, "A lifebook is more than a life story. It is a unique opportunity for parents to honor every minute of their children's lives. It is the single most important piece of 'paperwork' that any social worker can complete." Wow-what a powerful statement! This book is a treasure for social workers in child welfare.

IN PRINT

CHOOSING AN ONLINE THERAPIST: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO FINDING PROFESSIONAL HELP ON THE WEB (ISBN 1-929109-05-9, White Hat Communications, $12.95), by social worker Gary S. Stofle, is available now. Gary wrote this book to help consumers understand what online therapy is all about, when this mode of therapy is appropriate and when it's not, what credentials to look for in an online therapist, and what to expect in online therapy. While it is geared toward consumers, professionals who are interested in providing online therapy have also found it quite helpful. The book, "...does an excellent job of clarifying what for some people may seem to be an unfamiliar idea-the possibility of counseling and psychotherapy via the Internet," says John Suler, Ph.D., author of the online book, The Psychology of Cyberspace. See http://www.socialworker.com/onlinetherapist.htm for more information on this book (also available as an e-book).
